This mysterious Phacops speculator Trilobite was excavated from the Hamar
Laghdad formation in Alnif, Morocco and dates back to
the Middle Devonian period 360 to 410 million years ago.
Very little is known about the morphology of these
trilobites, but a few devoted specialists continue to
uncover more information, enriching our knowledge of
these prehistoric creatures. This large specimen has
highly articulated details, including visible honeycomb
facets in the eyes and raised nodules on the front, rear,
and along the central portion of the axial rings. The grey
stone matrix in which this fantastic fossil is embedded
is approximately 7" across, 5-1/2" high, and 1-1/4" thick.
The trilobite measures a generous 3" wide, 5-3/4" tall, and 1" thick
(above the matrix).
Trilobites, which are similar to the modern-day
Horseshoe Crabs, were among the first arthropods. They
lived in Paleozoic seas from 200 to 550 million years
ago and their fossil remains are found all over the
