The name "onyx" is often a misnomer that is applied to
chalcedony (a cryptocrystalline quartz) that has been
dyed black -- while black onyx does exist, it is rather
rare. Our true Banded Onyx is from the cold water
deposition of calcium carbonate saturated with iron in
the oxidized (red) and reduced (green) states and comes
from a single location near the border of Pakistan with
Iran. Vibrantly colorful bands of rust and green
alternate in this breathtaking, translucent stone.
Polished to a crisp shine, and available in three sizes,
these distinctive bowls are ideal for both display and
practical use.
Each Small Banded Onyx Bowl is
unique, and measures approximately 4" in diameter and
1-1/2" high. Shown on the left in the above photo.
