Aragonite -- named after the province of Aragon in Spain -- has the same chemical composition as calcite (calcium carbonate), but a different crystal structure. It most often appears as small white mounds of needle-like crystals, but the cluster we show here is composed of short and long nearly hexagonal, translucent, columnar crystals that terminate in a flat surface and radiate from the center (like the spokes of a wheel). Some of the crystals may be twinned or inter-penetrating. The light to medium red-brown color is due to the presence of other minerals, most likely iron.
The medium aragonite cluster you receive will be similar in quality and appearance to the one shown in the above photo and measure approximately 1-7/8 to 2" long, 1-1/2 to 1-3/4" wide, and 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" high.
