The Knightia Fish Fossils in these plaques, remnants of
freshwater herrings, were found in an ancient lake bed of
the Eocene Green River Lake system, which existed over
50 million years ago. As time passed, sediment and ash
from nearby volcanos gradually filled the lakes and were
transformed into sedimentary rock; the lake beds were
uplifted and eventually eroded into the desert-butte
landscape of what is now Wyoming. During that process
whole schools of fish were trapped, killed, and
preserved, with Knightia being the most common
fish fossil found.
The Knightia fish fossils in these plaques show incredible detail and clearly defined skeletal structures.
The fish fossils measure between 2" to 3" by 5/8" to 1" (including the tail and fins). The irregular rectangle siltstone plaques in which they sit measure between 2-3/4" to 3-3/4" by 1-1/2" to 2-1/2" by 1/4" to 3/4". You will be receiving a plaque similar to the one pictured above. If
you're looking for larger fossil plates, or plates with
more fish, e-mail us or call us toll-free at
