The meteorite that created these fragments crashed in the
Arizona desert in what is now called Meteor Crater. Some
of the fragments, like the one shown here, were found a
few miles west in Canyon Diablo. This Canyon Diablo
Meteorite is approximately 2-3/4" by 1-1/2" by 2" and
weighs 340 grams. It has angular protrusions and the dark
brown fusion crust shows a few visible regmaglypts
(shallow, elongated depressions), which are common to
iron meteorites. The rust spots you see are caused by
natural weathering.
