Leopardskin Jasper is an opaque buff to orangey tan,
brown, and ochre form of jasper that has sporadic dark
brown to nearly black spots or rings. Its name comes
from the pattern and coloration, which resemble a
leopard’s coat. This type of jasper--found as replaced
limestone or dolostone or as veins and nodules in mineral
deposits formed from hydrothermal or metasomatic processes--is composed of fine-grained cryptocrystalline quartz that contains iron oxide impurities.
Jasper has found widespread use in jewelry and for fashioning ornaments since its early use as beads and for seals. It measures 6.5-7.5 on the Moh’s scale and is found primarily in South America.
