A number of minerals contain trace elements that will
fluoresce when illuminated by ultraviolet light. Up to
90% of these minerals will reveal their vivid colors
under short-wave ultraviolet, and the remaining 10-15%
can be seen in long-wave ultraviolet. Small
(1-1/2" by 6-1/2" by 1-1/2") and lightweight, this handheld,
battery-operated long- and short-wave combination
ultraviolet lamp comes with one Long-Wave Fluorescent
Minerals Kit and one Short-Wave Fluorescents Minerals
Kit. The Long-Wave Kit contains five minerals --
tremolite, tirodite, fluorite, wernerite, and sodalite;
the Short-Wave, five more -- agrellite, chalcedony, selenite
crystals, tremolite/tirodite and willemite/calcite.
Each specimen is about 1" square (but sizes vary) and is
marked with its name and the location in which it was
found.
Extra care should be taken in the use of short-wave ultraviolet lamps,
especially around children, because it is short-wave
ultraviolet light that causes sunburn. Please note: battery-operated
UV lamps will illuminate to a distance of 2-3" and a circumference
of 1-2", depending upon conditions. If you need a stronger
lamp, try a Rechargeable Combination Lamp. Requires 4 AA
batteries (not included). The UV lamp and
