Fossil Information: Orthoceras are extinct cephalopods that lived in the ocean that once covered the Sahara Desert about 400 million years ago (during the Devonian Period). The fossilized structure is preserved in black marble and white calcite, and the small plate has been polished to highlight the sea creature's distinctive chamber walls.
