Fossil Information: Ancestors of the squid, octopus and chambered nautilus, ammonites and orthoceras are cephalopods that lived in the ocean covering the Sahara Desert around 400 million years ago during the Devonian Period. Ammonites were first called Ammon’s Stones because of their resemblance to the ram’s horns of Ammon, the ancient Egyptian god of life and procreation. An ancestor to the squid, orthoceras fossils are unique, beautiful and fossilized through a process called “calcite replacement” in which water dissolves the animal’s shell and replaces them with calcite.
