Mineralogy: Carnelian is a variety of microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz chalcedony, which ranges in color from pink to orange to red. This coloring is due to the presence of iron oxide in the chalcedony. Like other types of chalcedony, carnelian precipitates from silica-rich water solutions to form nodules in volcanic and sometimes metamorphic rocks.
