Mineralogy: Agate is a variety of microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz called chalcedony. Like other types of chalcedony, agate precipitates from silica-rich water solutions to form nodules in volcanic and sometimes metamorphic rocks. Agate tends to be much more translucent than other types of chalcedony, and often displays layered, banded patterns which represent layers of silica deposition. Trace amounts of different elements and mineral crystals cause colorings and patterns in agate.
