Mineralogy: Obsidian (volcanic silica glass) forms when silica-rich magma of granitic composition flows onto the earth’s surface and usually encounters water. The magma cools and solidifies before minerals can develop and crystallize; therefore, obsidian is an amorphous solid (glass) rather than a mineral aggregate. Coloring comes from trace amounts of iron and magnesium and when chipped can be translucent.
Metaphysical and Energy Healing Properties: Considered a stone of protection, aiding in self-control and maintaining courage in the face of adversity.
