Mineralogy: Lepidolite is the purple or, more rarely, pink variety of the phyllosilicate mica. This coloring is due to the presence of manganese and/or lithium. Like other micas, lepidolite displays perfect basal cleavage and most samples can be split into perfect, amazingly thin sheets. Lepidolite is quite a soft mineral with Mohs hardness of 3.
