Mineralogy: Sodalite is actually a mineral group, comprised of silicates and feldspathoids which may be blue, red, orange, or violet. All colors often contain white veining. Blue varieties are most common and most desired in the commercial market. The rock lapis lazuli is made primarily of a sodalite mineral called lazurite, thus it can be difficult to distinguish between lazurite-bearing rocks and other sodalite varieties.
